Palmeiras, one of the greatest clubs in Brazil and South America, secured their FIFA Club World Cup appearance by winning the Copa Libertadores in 2021. Since then, they have failed to win the continental competitions but have secured two Serie A titles. However, last year, they finished the competition without a trophy but were close - finishing second - six points away from the top spot. Interestingly, they won three points more than when they won the title in 2023! This year, they are doing well in all competitions. They are two points away from the top spot in Serie A, secured the 1/8 Finals of the domestic Cup and the knockout phase in the Copa Libertadores.
Chelsea recovered from a disastrous 2022/23 season when they finished 12th. They are slowly improving, and the last season could be called a success. The Blues secured the Champions League by finishing fourth in the Premier League and also won the Conference League in dominant fashion. Meanwhile, in the FIFA Club World Cup, the Blues were solid, but their only loss came against another great Brazilian team - Flamengo RJ. Right now, the bookies see them as the favorites in this duel, offering odds around 1.5 to secure the next phase of the competition.
Palmeiras vs Chelsea pick: Under 2.5 goals
Palmeiras have been excellent for this type of bet, going under 2.5 goals in three of four matches in the competition. The big reason for it is their fantastic defensive display. Thus far, they have kept a clean sheet in three of four games, and we expect another good defensive performance against the Europeans.
Chelsea, on the other hand, were under 2.5 goals in 50% of their FIFA Club World Cup games (two out of four). While they have been good offensively on paper, that was not entirely true. In the Benfica game, they won 4:1 but scored one goal in the regular time and the other three in ET when Benfica received a red card. Also, against another good team, Flamengo RJ, they scored one while being completely outplayed by the Brazilians.
We expect a really close match without too many chances for either side. Considering all the above, an under 2.5 goals seems like the best option for the FIFA Club World Cup tie.
Palmeiras team news
Palmeiras will miss two defenders due to the accumulation of yellow cards - Gustavo Gomez and Joaquin Piquerez. Even though those are important players, the Greens are stacked at the back and have several good backup options.
Bruno Rodrigues, Figueiredo, and Murilo, who missed the previous game(s) due to injuries, should remain sidelined.
Interestingly, winger Estevao is set to leave the club and join Chelsea on 14th July for 34 million euros. Still, he will most likely have the opportunity to play against his future club.
