A place in the finals of the Concacaf Gold Cup final will be at stake when Mexico and Honduras face in California on Thursday morning.

Mexico beat Saudi Arabia 2-0 to get this far, while the Honduras national football team beat Panama 5-4 on penalties in their own quarter final tie.

El Tri have been one of the best teams in this tournament, as they demonstrated from the outset. Javier Aguirre’s team dominated proceedings in their opening Group A game, beating the Dominican Republic 3–2, and followed this with a 2–0 win over Suriname on Match Day 2. Their final group stage game ended in a goalless draw with Costa Rica, but there were no complaints as El Tricolor made many changes to his starting line-up.

Honduras were not expected to reach the quarter-finals of this competition after their performance in their opening Group B match. Los Catrachos secured their spot in the knockout stages with back-to-back victories over El Salvador and Curaçao on Match Day 2 and 3, respectively.

Honduras have shown great fighting spirit in this competition, not only by getting out of the group stages, but also in the quarter-final. Reinaldo Rueda’s side came from a goal down to draw 1:1 with Panama, ultimately reaching the semi-finals, and they have conceded few goals.

Having said that, I am backing Mexico because of their offensive and defensive performances in this tournament so far. El Tri have scored at least twice in all but one of their four games so far, and have kept three clean sheets. They also have an excellent head to head record against Honduras, having won all but one of the last five meetings.
