Two sides relegated from the Premier League square-off on the opening weekend of the Championship season as Luton hosts Burnley at Kenilworth Road.

Both teams come into Monday's Championship contest having endured somewhat difficult pre-season campaigns. 

Hosts Luton, still under the charge of Rob Edwards, slipped to defeat in three of five friendlies played this summer, with their only win a 1:0 victory against  Rukh Vynnyky. The Hatters slipped to a 3:1 home defeat against Celta Vigo in their most recent friendly encounter last weekend. 

Now winless in 21 of their last 23 games played since February. Luton will quickly need to find their form if they are to maintain serious aspirations of an immediate return to England´s top flight.

Usually an entertaining watch at Kenilworth Road, the Hatters have seen an average of 3.9 goals scored in their last 15 home fixtures since a 3:2 defeat against Chelsea at the end of last year. Each of their last 11 matches on home soil saw both teams score, while ten of their last 15 home games saw BTTS and at least three goals scored.

Burnley make the trip to London after a particularly difficult summer that has seen them not only lose their top flight status, but also the services of head coach Vinny Kompany. The Belgian boss made a shock switch to Bayern Munich in June. 

Now under the charge of Scott Parker, the Clarets were held to a 1:1 draw against Cadiz in their final pre-season preparation matchup. Without a win in ten of their last 11 matches played since April, Burnley have struggled in away games played this year, losing seven and winning just one game on the road in 2024. Burnley did claim a 2:1 win on their last visit to Kenilworth Road last October. 

Six of the Clarets last seven games on their travels saw BTTS, while an average of 2.95 goals were scored in those games.

With both of last season's meetings between these sides seeing both teams net, I'm confident in a repeat outcome on Monday evening. BTTS is my top tip, while I won´t be surprised to see at least three goals scored at Kenilworth Road.
