On Friday evening, Coventry and Oxford United will face off against each other in the second round of the Championship at Coventry Building Society Arena in Coventry.

Last year, Coventry was on pace to secure the Championship Playoffs. However, they had a terrible end of the season, winning just one point in the last six games and wasting the opportunity to play in the playoffs for the second year in a row. For many football pundits, surprisingly, the club decided to stick with coach Mark Robins. However, they improved the squad, and their goal is to at least reach the Playoffs this year. Unfortunately for the Sky Blues, they opened the season with a loss to Stoke 1:0 but then did well in the EFL Cup, winning 1:0 against Bristol City.

Oxford United secured promotion to the Championship after a 25-year wait. The popular U's managed to reach the second tier of English football after beating the favored Peterborough and Bolton in the playoffs. This year, Oxford United will most likely be a team that fights for survival, as it the case with most newly promoted teams. However, the start of the season has been promising as they won 2:0 against Norwich in the league and 2:0 against Peterborough in the EFL Cup.

Coventry vs Oxford pick: Under 2.5 goals

Even though Coventry were one of the best offensive teams last year, they did not start this season well, scoring just one goal in the first two games. They even struggled to create some good chances, and it seems like they are not completely ready for the season. So, we do not expect a dominant offensive display against a team that kept a clean sheet in the first two games.

Oxford United won both games this season 2:0, and although they were impressive in those games, both were at home at Kassam Stadium. Now, on the road, we do not trust them to be as efficient as in the first games.

These teams played four games combined this season and were under 2.5 goals every time. Additionally, Oxford United played almost exclusively low-scoring games in the pre-season as well. In seven friendlies, they were under 2.5 goals on five occasions - 71%.

Considering all the above, an under 2.5 goals bet should be the best option for this Championship tie.

Coventry City team news

Over the Summer, the club added five players, including Luis Binks, who was on loan but was signed on a permanent deal. The club spent 12.75 million euros on those five players. On the other hand, four players left the team - Callum O'Hare, Liam Kelly, Simon Moore, and Matty Godden.

After a 1:0 win over Bristol City, coach Mark Robins spoke to the media. He said they are having some problems at the moment, but that is only a part of the process. "Things will come. Players have got to realize and wake up a little bit, where to utilize their strengths to the maximum," the coach added.

The team should have no new injuries or suspensions, but Raphael Borges Rodrigues and Ben Sheaf, who missed the previous games with injuries, should remain sidelined.

Oxford United team news

After a 2:0 win in the EFL Cup against Peterborough, coach Des Buckingham was delighted. He was especially satisfied with the win because he rotated the squad. "We're going to need all of the players we've got in the Championship this season," the coach said. The 39-year-old coach hinted that the U's will sign another striker or winger in the upcoming days.

According to credible sources, the only player to miss the upcoming game with an injury is Will Goodwin, who has an ankle injury and will most likely be out for five more weeks.
