On Tuesday afternoon, two Veikkausliiga teams, SJK and VPS, will face off in the Suomen Cup 1/8 Finals at OmaSp Stadion in Seinajoki.
SJK have mostly been in the upper half of the league's table in the previous decade. Last year, they finished 3rd in the Championship Group, eventually failing to secure Europe in the Conference League Playoffs. This year, SJK had a poor start in the Liiga Cup, but after that initial bad start to the season, they are doing well. They are 5th in the league with 22 points, just three points away from the top spot.
VPS came to this season after a really successful last year. They had a pretty similar regular season as SJK, but unlike SJK, they had great Conference League Playoffs where they managed to secure European Qualifiers for only the sixth time in their 100-year-old history. This year, despite a terrible start in the Liiga Cup, VPS are looking like one of the better teams in Finland. However, in the Suomen Cup, we must acknowledge they were lucky to face off against Inter Turku's B team in the previous round.
SJK vs VPS pick: SJK to win
SJK are n solid form, having won two and drawn one in the last three games. However, we trust them very much at home, where they have lost just once in seven league matches. That loss was against Mariehamn (2:0), in a game in which SJK deserved at least a draw but were unlucky. Additionally, at home, SJK have won four of seven league matches. Only KuPS have a better win percentage on home turf at this moment in Veikkausliiga.
VPS have been undefeated in the last six games, but in the previous four, they have won only against a heavy underdog, Inter Turku 2. So, even though they are on an unbeaten run, if we exclude that Cup game, VPS's form is far from impressive.
These teams met about two and a half months ago at Lemonsoft Stadion in Vaasa and it ended with a 1:1 draw in a really close match. However, if we look at h2h games in Seinajoki, SJK were far superior team, winning four of the last (official) games.
Considering all the above, we believe that SJK are a bit closer to winning the upcoming Suomen Cup 1/8 Finals.

Forward Rasmus Karjalainen suffered an injury in the previous game against Ilves and had to leave the field after only 38 minutes. This was unfortunate for Karjalainen because he started playing really well, scoring two goals and assisting one in the last three games. With him potentially out, we expect a 23-year-old Tuomas Kaukua in the starting lineup.
After a 2:2 draw with Ilves, coach Stevie Grieve spoke to the media. He said they had a nice start, but when they scored a goal, they gave too much free space to the opposing team. "In the last ten (minutes), it looked like we might score one more goal and win, but this time we didn't manage to do it. However, you have to be satisfied with the score," the coach added.

The team's best goalkeeper, Rasums Leislahti, suffered an injury in the previous game against AC Oulu and left the field in the 60th minute. With him out, Teppo Marttinen should start as a replacement.
After a 1:1 draw against AC Oulu, coach Jussi Nuorela spoke to the media. He said they tried hard and pressured the opposing team well, but it wasn't enough. He also noted that it felt they were in control of the game but lacked the quality to create good goal chances.
