  • Competition: Copa America
  • Date: Saturday, 22th June 2024
  • Kickoff: 01:00 UTC +1 / 02:00 CEST
  • Venue: AT&T Stadium (Arlington, TX)

Peru have two Copa America titles, but its glory days were long ago, as the last Peruvian title came in 1975. This year, they are in a tough group with Argentina, Chile, and Canada, so even reaching the quarterfinal will be challenging for Jorge Fossati's team. Peru are in great form in 2024, as they had three wins and one draw in four friendlies this year. In the previous game, they won 1-0 against El Salvador. Fossati's team finished that match with 63% ball possession and 13 more shots on the goal than the opponent, so they deserved another victory that would boost confidence.

Like Peru, Chile also have two Copa America titles, but both trophies came in the 21st century (2015 and 2016). Chile also hopes to reach the quarterfinal, but it is realistic that Argentina will be the group leader, while Chile, Peru, and Canada will fight for second place and the knockout phase. Chile are in solid form, too, as they won two of the last three matches. In the previous game, they won 3-0 at home in a friendly against Paraguay.

Peru vs Chile pick: Under 2.5 goals

Peru and Chile are playing h2h matches almost every year. Interestingly, the last three games finished with two or fewer goals. We should expect under 2.5 goals in the Copa America opener, too.

Peru team news

Peru doesn't have world-class players right now. The team leader is still Paolo Guerrero, who is 40 years old, but he hasn't given up on football. Guerrero scored three goals for Universidad Cesar Vallejo this year. However, it is more realistic for Gianluca Lapadula to start as a striker on Saturday versus Chile.

Peru have some injury problems. Christian Cueva and Bryan Reyna are recovering from injuries and it is unknown whether they will be ready for the game against Chile.
