Separated by just two places and one point in the Ligue 1 table, Champions League hopefuls Lille and Lens clash in Friday's Derby du Nord at the Stade Pierre-Mauroy.

Lille returns to action on Friday after picking up a 1-1 draw away to high-flying Brest a fortnight ago. Paul Fonseca´s side are unbeaten in their last five matches since a 3:1 loss at Toulouse at the end of February. 

Currently fourth in the division, Lille have a strong record to thank for their position in Ligue 1. Les Dogues have lost only one of 12 home league matches this season while they are unbeaten in 27 of their last 28 Ligue 1 matches at the Stade Pierre-Mauroy. 

However, Lille can expect a stiff test of their credentials this weekend with visiting Lens enjoying a superb run of away form. Les Sang et have won three of their last four away matches while they have lost just one of their last ten on the road (W5, D4, L1). 

Still, Franck Haise's side come into this fixture after suffering a 3-1 defeat at home to Nice before the international break. Les Sang et have lost three of their last five matches.

Undoubtedly a tough match to call with too much confidence, recent matches between these northern rivals have been evenly balanced. Four of their last five encounters saw BTTS. Three of those games finished deadlocked including two 1:1 draws in their most recent league meetings, with both teams picking up one win apiece since the start of 2022. 

Historically, Lille do have a strong home record against Lens with victories picked up in seven of their last eight meetings since 2006. However, I expect Lens to score on Friday, and a low-scoring share of the spoils seems the likeliest outcome at the Stade Pierre-Mauroy.
