Istanbul Basaksehir hosts Besiktas in the Istanbul derby on Thursday evening, aiming to close the gap on their visiting rivals in the Super Lig.

Both teams are coming off defeats in their last league matches over a fortnight ago with Basaksehir losing 2-1 to Ankaragucu and Besiktas suffering a 2-1 defeat against Antalyaspor.

Visiting Besiktas have now lost their last three matches but still retain only a four point advantage on hosts Basaksehir who sit seventh in the division. The home side had won three successive league matches before slipping up against Ankaragucu.

Both teams played friendlies during the international break, with Basaksehir winning both games and Besiktas winning one and drawing one.

Despite their recent run of form, Besiktas remain fourth in the Super Lig, and on-course to qualify for European competitions next season. 

A tough match to call, Istanbul Basaksehir have a strong home record in recent weeks, and I fancy them to take advantage of an inconsistent Besiktas. Basaksehir have won seven of their last ten home Super Lig matches. Conversely, Besiktas have lost seven of 15 away league games this season, including three of the last five.

Given their strong recent home form, and Besiktas tendency to struggle away from home this season, I fancy the hosts to claim a vital win, and maintain their hopes of European qualification.
