The Serie A season comes to a close this weekend at the Stadio Carlo Castellani as relegation-threatened Empoli hosts Roma.

Heading into their final fixture of the season, Empoli know they must win if they are to have any chance of avoiding relegation to Serie B. 37 games into the campaign, the hosts sit one point behind Udinese, and with an inferior goal difference, have it all to do this weekend. 

Empoli´s recent form offers some encouragement. Davide Nicola´s side picked up seven points in their three most recent home fixtures, including victories against Torino and Napoli. Unfortunately,  Gli Azzurri only managed to pick up two points from their next four matches since their win against last season´s Serie A champions. 

In their most recent outing, a 1:1 draw at Udinese, Empoli at least maintained hope of survival but an equalizer conceded after 104 minutes will have dented their confidence ahead of this weekend´s must-win fixture.

Roma make the trip to the Stadio Carlo Castellani now unable to qualify for the Champions League. With a sixth-place finish already assured, Daniele De Rossi´s side have little to play for this weekend. 

Now in the best of form, Roma failed to win five successive league matches before a hard-earned 1:0 win against Genoa last weekend. I Giallorossi have also failed to win four of their last five away Serie A fixtures.

Given Empoli´s recent home improvements, and Roma's potential lack of motivation on Sunday, I fancy the home side to claim an unlikely victory. While the hosts recent record against Roma is not great, Nicola´s men will be fully motivated to see-off a side that has shown some fatigue in recent weeks.

I´m backing Empoli in the double chance market, and outright to claim a massive win at the Stadio Carlo Castellani this weekend.
