A place in the quarter-finals of the AFCON is up for grabs at the Stade Laurent Pokou on Sunday evening as seven-time winners Egypt takes on underdogs DR Congo.

Sunday´s round of sixteen tie has all the hallmarks of a tight occasion with both teams proving difficult to beat in the early stages of this competition.

Egypt arrive at the Stade Laurent Pokou having drawn all three of their group stage matches against Mozambique, Ivory Coast and Cabo Verde. Remarkably, all three games finished as 2:2 draws while Egypt have now drawn their last seven AFCON finals matches since 2022.

Likewise, DR Congo come into this fixture having qualified for the last sixteen by drawing all three of their group stage matches. Sébastien Desabre´s side shared the points in successive matches against Zambia, Morocco and Tanzania. 

With both nations drawing their three respective group stage matches, another draw must surely be considered at an attractive price. 

While Egypt have had the better of previous matches against DR Congo, the Pharaohs look much less of a team with the great Mo Salah unavailable. Unconvincing in the group stages, the seven-time AFCON winners will need a significantly improved performance if they are to make it past a DR Congo side that has improved considerably in recent years.

BTTS must surely have a chance considering Egypt´s three successive 2:2 draws at these finals. Congo also saw BTTS in two of their three group stage matches. Could we be set for another 2:2 draw on Sunday? You wouldn´t bet against it. 

Ultimately, I fancy this one to go the distance so the draw has to be the best for Sunday's contest at the Stade Laurent Pokou.
