In the 2021/22 season, Alaves were relegated to La Liga 2 in their sixth season in the Spanish top-flight division. Still, even securing the Champions League (which they mathematically did) is a massive success. Right now, they are 2nd with a one-point advantage over 3rd-placed Barcelona, and securing that 2nd spot is their only goal in the remaining four games.

Alaves are in good form, winning three in a row. However, they rarely won games against the top six teams. So far, they played ten games against those teams, losing on eight occasions. At home, they looked good through the season, but once again, only against teams from outside the top six.
Girona are in excellent form, winning four of the last five matches, including a massive 4:2 win over Barcelona in the last round. Away from home, the Catalan team had their struggles in recent weeks, but they played much better than the results suggest.

Andoni Gorosabel, a starting right full-back, suffered a muscle injury in the previous game against Valencia and had to leave the field. The 27-year-old defender is a key part of the team, and his absence is a massive handicap. So far, he has started in 94% of Alaves' La Liga games.
An additional problem for the Basque team is the absence of their top goalscorer, Samu Omorodion. Atletico Madrid loanee scored nine and assisted one goal in 32 appearances.
