We all dream of the day when we can finally pack in the day job. When we can down tools and tell the boss to find a replacement because our days toiling away on their watch are well and truly over. If you hope to make this daydream a reality in the next few years via the medium of playing Texas Hold’em online, you’ve come to the right place. Today, we’re providing five online poker strategy tips to help you achieve your goals…
1 – Mastering the check-raise
Any poker player worth their salt knows how to check-raise like a pro. Trust us – you need this weapon in your poker armoury. Put simply, the check-raise involves checking when the action is on you and then raising when a player behind you has made their bet. Check raising helps with two things. One – getting more dough in the pot when you are confident you have the strongest hand. Two – as a bluff that gets your opponent to throw away a decent hand. When you’re starting out and learning the ropes, we recommend using the check-raise mostly to add value to the pot, but as you get more confident, try your luck using it as a bluff. To see how to use it in the heat of the moment, check out this video.
2 – Balance sch-malance!
We’re always hearing people recommend players adopt a ‘balanced style’ of online poker and to this we say – nonsense! While it’s important to balance your play against experienced opponents by altering actions and bet sizes so that they don’t get your number too efficiently, when you first start out you’ll be playing against a wide enough array of opponents for this not to matter. Try different strategies out, see what feels good and develop your own style through experience. That’s when the magic happens!
3 – Invest in some software
If you’re in this for the long haul (and you want to realistically quit that 9-5) you need to take your online poker playing seriously. Poker software comes in very handy. It allows you to track all of the hands you play so that when you come up against opponents you’ve played before, you can instantly view data on their game. Additionally, these pieces of software allow you to replay games at a later date. This is an incredible tool for studying and improving your game. There are some great poker software options out there and many of them are free.
4 – Poker buddies
If you want to make it to the big leagues, you need to make poker a way of life. This means finding some buddies to play with on a regular basis. Online poker is all very well, but incorporating some IRL play will open your eyes to tactics and strategies that you want to know about.
5 – Choose when you play
The online poker world is a competitive space – make sure that you’re only sitting down to play when your head is in the right place. Avoid playing tired or when you’re in a bad mood – as you’ll only make mistakes and make that bad mood worse. You need to be able to relax, get in the zone and pay attention. It may be tempting to have the TV on at the same time, or to be on WhatsApp with the boys but if you want to play seriously, you need to treat your online poker time like a job.
