Sheffield Wednesday

Walsall host Sheffield Wednesday in R1 of this season's EFL Cup, knowing that a potential upset is on the cards this weekend against higher-quality opposition.

Darrell Clarke will urge a spirited showing from his players, eager to surpass last year's disappointment with victory on Saturday. They lost 3-2 to Crawley Town in the first-round last season, while their visitors were beaten by a Dominic Calvert-Lewin brace in R3.

This is the first H2H meeting between the pair for eight years, after four League One fixtures between the pair were evenly split (one win each, two draws). Read my match preview, for the correct score predictions and best betting tips ahead of this fixture.

Walsall vs Sheffield Wednesday Betting Tips

Walsall prepare for their first competitive fixture since March and will fancy their chances against Championship opposition in Sheffield Wednesday. They could have been drawn against tougher sides, like Brentford and Swansea, but host Garry Monk's side knowing what happened twelve months ago in this competition.

A 3-2 home defeat by Crawley, who finished their shortened season a point ahead of them in League Two's mid-table positions, certainly hurt.

They were 2-0 down, before Caolan Lavery – a second-half substitute – reduced arrears moments after coming on from the penalty spot. He combined with fullback Cameron Norman to complete his brace, but it proved futile as Crawley held firm for a narrow victory.

The pair are available for selection and will be itching to secure progression into round two this weekend. They won't be scared either. Lavery was at Sheffield Wednesday (2012-16), while Norman is a Norwich academy graduate – the Canaries were relegated from the Premier League in July.

After winning just one of their final seven Championship fixtures, the Owls held Premier League side Leicester to a goalless friendly draw last week. Holding the likes of Dennis Praet, Youri Tielemans and Jamie Vardy scoreless is a commendable achievement, especially considering the manner in which they conceded goals in 2019-20.

Walsall vs Sheffield Wednesday Correct Score Predictions

Walsall can easily produce a shock this weekend, but Sheffield Wednesday will be bullish about their chances of progression – not least with the aforementioned result in their minds.
