Slovakia return to international duty with a pivotal European Championship qualification play-off encounter, hosting Ireland in Bratislava later this week.

It's a rearranged semi-final clash – originally slated to take place in March – and whoever prevails will progress to play either Bosnia or Northern Ireland for a berth at next summer's rescheduled Euro Finals.

Both underachieved in their respective qualifying campaigns, so there's no more second chances here. Who will emerge victorious? Read my match preview, for the correct score predictions and best betting tips ahead of this fixture.

Slovakia vs Ireland Betting Tips

Slovakia finished third with 13 points from eight games during their Euro 2020 qualification group, which featured Croatia and Wales. The latter nation narrowly pipped them (14 pts) to an automatic competition berth, leaving them in limbo with play-offs on the agenda.

Since a 2-0 win over Azerbaijan in mid-November last year, Slovakia-Ireland was initially scheduled for March 26 but ultimately cancelled. Their recent internationals are all we can go off: a 3-1 home defeat by Czech Republic, then conceding a late equaliser to draw 1-1 with Israel in their Nations League group last month.

Considering both sides are below them in the FIFA rankings, those displays aren't likely to do Pavel Hapal or his crop of players much confidence ahead of this clash. They host an Ireland side who aren't exactly in good form either – with just one victory (3-1 friendly vs. New Zealand) in their last six internationals.

It makes this affair all the more compelling, between two sides struggling for form, but ultimately one just needs to deliver over 90 minutes here. That's easier said than done: Ireland have only scored two goals in a competitive fixture once since beating Moldova in October 2017 (World Cup qualifying). They've played 17 since then.

Slovakia regularly struggle against evenly-matched opposition, but will be boosted by the presence of Napoli's legendary midfielder Marek Hamsik, now at Chinese side Dalian Pro.

Slovakia vs Ireland Correct Score Predictions

This will be a tightly-contested affair and I'd be tempted to back Slovakia given their individual quality – Hamsik, Napoli midfielder Stanislav Lobotka and Inter's Milan Skriniar for example.

However, it's a collective team effort and Ireland won't go down without a fight. I'm instead predicting BTTS here.
