The Premier League is the most watched sports league in the World which it incredibly broadcasts to over 200 territories and 643 million homes. This therefore means there is a potential TV audience of 4.7 billion people! A fairly jaw dropping statistic and one that again backs up the popularity and why the Premier League is head a shoulders above the other football leagues around the World. With this being the case it comes as no surprise that there has been a long list of the World’s top players who have played in the league over the years. Whether this be the stunning talent that is Cristiano Ronaldo who has firmly established as one of the greatest players in the history of the game. He continues to break records each year and if he had stayed in the Premier league he would have likely already surpassed the record set by Shearer which is likely to stand for years to come.
Shearer is currently sitting head and shoulders above his nearest challengers in the Premier League all time goal scoring table. He finished his lengthy career with 260 goals in the league and 283 in all competitions. His attacking prowess was also shown in the fact that he had a near 50% strike rate when playing for England. He spent the majority of his career at Newcastle United before retiring following the 2005-06 season. When you look into the list of players sitting behind him in the all-time scoring charts there is only Wayne Rooney and Jermain Defoe who are still active. However it is highly unlikely either of these players will be able to challenge that record as they currently sit on 208 and 162 goals respectively.
