When it comes to the football season, there are always a huge number of bets ready to be placed, statistics to scour over and tickets to purchase before the big games. The Premier League is deemed to be the most competitive football league in the world but because of this, there have been a number of teams who have dominated the league in recent years whereas many other smaller clubs haven’t had much of a look in. Nevertheless, that all changed when Leicester City, against all odds, won the Premier League title in the 2015/16 season, influencing a number of clubs to up their game and change the face of the Premier League for good. Here, we’re taking a closer look at the ones to watch for the upcoming season so you know where you should be placing your bets as the games go on!
Last season Tottenham were one of the strongest teams who looked like they were set to win the Premier League until Chelsea began to dominate. Tottenham have been getting stronger and stronger with each season that passes, with players beginning to settle in and Harry Kane’s performance levels becoming stronger and stronger as each season passes. While they would generally be dubbed as the ones to watch, this season is highly likely to be different for them for two main factors. Firstly, they have been exceptionally quiet in the summer transfer window this year, meaning there are a number of different factors that could go against them. Kyle Walker departed the club for Manchester City this summer, which could be a huge blow to the club if Trippier cannot be the replacement they are expecting. In addition to this, the club are based at Wembley this season while White Hart Lane undergoes a refurbishment/expansion. With the club’s record of never winning a game at Wembley, the odds are stacked against them this season. Nevertheless, they may be able to overcome this dark cloud and push for the title once again, making them potential ones to watch depending on how they perform in the first few games of the season.
Arsenal have made some great signings this transfer window with the star being Lacazette joining the club this summer. Arsene Wenger will be coming into the season with a very big point to prove considering the amount of bad press and lack of fan support he received throughout 2016-17. The club have already pushed the boundaries and have showed exceptional skill and teamwork throughout the preseason so far meaning they could be the ones to watch for the season. However, will their Christmas wall hit them again this year? We are yet to find out. However, a big blow to the club could be Alexis Sanchez deciding to make a transfer abroad, possibly to Paris Saint Germain. If this happens, the pressure will build on players like Lacazette and Ozil, who has been somewhat underwhelming since he joined from Real Madrid, which could cause them to falter.
The reigning champions are looking to start the season without two of their star players – Diego Costa who is looking for a move potentially to Spain this summer, and Eden Hazard who will be out after a knee operation for at least a few months at the start of the season. While this could provide a pathway for other exceptional, key players like Willian to take the helm, and he is certainly ready to take on the challenge, it’ll be interesting to see whether this will impact their performance. Not only are they without their key players, they are also in the running for the Champions League this year, so it’ll be interesting to see what Conte does in order to keep the team at the top, and to dub them as a one to watch. Nevertheless, they’ve been pretty quiet this transfer season, aside from their signing of Alavaro Morata at a cost of £70 million. Just a few days prior to this, the club were also faced with an unhappy manager, but this has now been reined in dramatically with a new deal being signed by the Italian. It’s going to be an interesting season for the club for certain, with a lot of new tests and challenges for them to overcome under their fiery new manager. However, it’s highly unlikely we’re going to see anything close to the side’s last season under Mourihno when things began to turn sour. Conte has already gained a lot of respect from both the fans and the players, making their season this year almost certain to be an interesting one.
As a team that once dominated the Premier League, before the departure of Sir Alex Ferguson, Manchester United will be looking to redeem that status under manager Jose Mourihno. Mourihno’s side didn’t perform quite as well as they should’ve despite the record signing of Paul Pogba and the self-proclaimed king of football Zlatan Ibrahimovic. Nevertheless, the club have signed Romelu Lukaku this season, who is supposedly set to be firing goals into the back of the net which the club is hoping will push them to the finish line this season. They are highly likely to be a contender for the title if Mourihno can keep attack on the go, while parking the bus this season. If you’re looking for a team to focus on when it comes to placing football bets on the most popular football league in the world, then Manchester United are certainly one of the ones to watch.
Interestingly, Everton have made a huge number of singings this transfer window, meaning there is a lot of potential for the club. With them looking likely to sign Olivier Giroud from Arsenal after he was pushed down the pecking order with their signing of Lacazette this summer, they’ve already had what’s been dubbed as a ‘sensational’ transfer window. Pickford, Keane, Ramirez, Rooney, Sigudsson all signed or on the cards, there’s plenty of new faces to be seen at Goodison Park this season. While it’ll be interesting to determine whether this could hurt the seamlessness of the team, it is almost certain that the club will be on their way to battling for at least top 4 this season.
There are a huge number of teams that are likely to battle for the top four this season, and many surprises are likely to be on the cards. West Ham United have been pushing for a number of signings this season, which while they are unlikely to win the Premier League, they may be a good option for those looking for a team likely to push the ‘big’ teams. There are also a huge number of players on the ones to watch list, with many players looking to breakthrough into the league itself this season. Youngster Reiss Nelson, an Arsenal player, made his first appearance for the club against Sydney FC, and he has been dubbed as very close to making the move. Other names to remember include Bournemouth’s Connor Mahoney, Chelsea’s Ruben Loftus-Cheek, and Everton’s Jonjoe Kenny. It’s certainly going to be an exciting season!
