Round 1 of this season's EFL Cup and already there's an opportunity for cup surprises, when Championship side Middlesbrough host League One's Shrewsbury Town on Friday.

Neil Warnock couldn't complain with his side's pre-season preparations ahead of this one, with two contrasting victories recently. As for their visitors, Shrewsbury flattered to deceive during their friendlies – both in competition and subsequent results.

Will that impact their chances of winning at the Riverside? Whatever happens, one of these two sides will have improved after first-round defeats in this competition last season. Read my match preview, for the correct score predictions and best betting tips ahead of this fixture.

Middlesbrough vs Shrewsbury Town Betting Tips

After finishing the Championship season with three wins and three defeats in their final six matches, Boro's one-month break ended as they earned a narrow 1-0 win over Plymouth.

Britt Assombalonga was their matchwinner on August 25 against the League One side, but even Warnock didn't expect what he saw when they hosted Newcastle on Tuesday.

Steve Bruce's side, who finished 13th in last season's Premier League, were thrashed 5-1 by their rampant hosts. Assombalonga netted a brace before the half-hour mark, while Marcus Tavernier and summer acquisition Grant Hall also got on the scoresheet.

Allan Saint-Maximin reduced arrears before half-time, but teenage winger Stephen Walker made it a fantastic five from the penalty spot late on. Talk about perfect preparation.

They'll be in good spirits ahead of this clash against a weaker side, though Shrewsbury didn't help themselves with their level of friendly opposition recently. After a 3-1 win over Nuneaton – who play in the seventh tier of English football – they lost 1-0 against League Two side Walsall.

Dan Udoh's second-half penalty saw off Wolves under-23s on August 25, but whichever way you want to look at it, those results just aren't encouraging to see.

Middlesbrough vs Shrewsbury Town Correct Score Predictions

Warnock will warn his players about the potential banana skin at play here, hosting underdogs who ultimately have nothing to lose. However, I'd be surprised if Middlesbrough didn't win and do it comfortably too, judging by their victory at Newcastle's expense earlier this week.
