After conceding seven goals in two matches against Premier League opposition, Ipswich Town were in for a rude awakening during their recent friendlies. Nonetheless, Paul Lambert's men look to do one better than last year by progressing past the first round of the EFL Cup this weekend.

They host Bristol Rovers, beaten by Premier League side Brighton in R2 last season, but at least this is a competitive matchup between two League One clubs.

In a match that neither side wants to play so early into the 2020-21 campaign, which side will progress into the next round? Read my match preview, for the correct score predictions and best betting tips ahead of this fixture.

Ipswich Town vs Bristol Rovers Betting Tips

Comprehensive defeats by Tottenham and West Ham in quick succession were less than ideal for Ipswich after a five-month layoff. However, they earned valuable minutes against top-level players for their troubles – which may prove crucial, targeting Championship promotion at the second time of asking this season.

By contrast, Bristol Rovers are preparing for their fifth consecutive League One campaign and were busy in pre-season with friendlies galore. They recorded three wins, two defeats and one draw against various opposition – most recently a 2-1 loss to last season's Championship playoff semi-finalists Cardiff.

Aden Flint and Robert Glatzel were on the scoresheet for Neil Harris' side, in a 140-minute affair aimed at maximising minutes across the two squads. They'll be hoping that experience stands them in good stead against Ipswich, as they aim to replicate their 2-1 win from last December here.

Tyler Smith (Swindon Town) and Tom Nichols (free agent), who were first-half goalscorers that afternoon, have since departed the club. That means the onus will be on players like former Brighton forward Jonah Ayunga and Derby academy graduate Jayden Mitchell-Lawson to create in the final third.

Ipswich Town vs Bristol Rovers Correct Score Predictions

Despite their contrasting fortunes in pre-season, these are two evenly matched League One sides and it wouldn't be surprising to see either one progress into R2. Ipswich want to atone for last season's underachievements though, so I'm backing them to narrowly progress here.
