Following a two-week hiatus, Serie A returns this weekend with a potentially vital fixture in the battle to beat the drop as Spezia welcomes Salernitana to Stadio Alberto Picco.

Both sides have picked up some form in recent weeks and now find themselves outside of the relegation positions. However, hosts Spezia, who trail their opponents by just three points, remain only four clear of the final relegation spot.

Having failed to win eight successive league matches during January and February, Spezia brought their winless spell to an end with a sensational 2:1 win against Inter in their most recent fixture at the Stadio Alberto Picco. Spezia had failed to win any of their previous nine home Serie A matches.

Now facing a Salernitana side that remains unbeaten in their last four league matches, including three games under new boss Leonardo Semplici, a tight contest seems likely with little to choose between these two sides. Salernitana edged to a narrow 1:0 victory in the reverse fixture earlier this season, and a similarly even battle should be expected.

A particularly tough fixture to call, both teams' goal numbers are somewhat up and down, and few conclusions can be drawn on whether this one will go over or under 2.5 goals, although we would probably edge to this one being a low-scorer.

With that being said, five of these sides' previous six meetings have seen BTTS, but that outcome has proved relatively infrequent for both teams over recent weeks. Still, Serie A is a league that regularly delivers in this market, and both scoring is an outcome we cannot discount for this fixture.

Considering all of that, we feel this game is perhaps one that is best left sitting on the fence - in other words, a share of the spoils could be on the cards, with Spezia drawing three of their last six and Salernitana also seeing each of their previous three games finishing deadlocked. 

Ultimately, neither side will want to lose this match, although both will probably see it as a good opportunity to pull away from the drop zone. Yet, we feel an evenly matched affair is likely to ensue, and a low-scoring 1:1 draw could be the way to go for this Serie A relegation battle.
