Two of the pre-tournament favourites come together for a crucial Group E fixture on Sunday evening as Germany looks to rebound from their shock loss to Japan against Spain.

While Germany suffered another World Cup shock against Asian opponents for the second consecutive finals, Spain would have no such problems as they overwhelmed group underdogs Costa Rica with a rampant 7:0 victory.

Spain vs Germany Betting Tips: BTTS/Spain or draw

This fixture always looked the tastiest of all the sections, and with Germany losing against the Japanese, this battle of two recent champions takes on even greater significance.

While Spain now controls the section, Germany knows even a draw is unlikely to be enough, with Japan likely to take care of Costa Rica earlier in the day.

Of course, needing a win, Spain might be the last opponent Hansi Flick would have hoped for, with La Roja´s scoring a stunning 6:0 win when these nations last met just over two years ago. Including that loss, Germany have won only one of their last seven matches against the Spanish.

Spain also won 1:0 when these nations last met at the World cup in the 2010 semi-finals and, given their confidence, seem likely to take at least a point here with Germans facing a remarkable second successive group stage elimination at the World Cup.

Given the German's need for a win, we have to expect an open and entertaining game here where both sides should have plenty of chances. With that in mind, BTTS looks likely, although Spain could have the psychological edge given their fine win against Costa Rica and their dominant win in these nations' most recent contest back in 2020.

Having scored a sensational 7:0 win against Costa Rica, Luis Enrique seems unlikely to make any changes to his starting lineup.

However, Alex Balde has been called up to replace the injured left-back Jose Gaya.

Hansi Flick will surely consider changes to his starting XI following the surprising loss against Japan on Wednesday.

Leroy Sane remains a doubt, having missed the German's second successive defeat against Asian opposition at the World Cup.
