Scotland vs Israel Betting Tips

This Saturday, a hugely important WC qualifying fixture is set for Hampden Park as oddly familiar rivals Scotland and Israel come head to head for their 7th meeting in under 3 years.

Amazingly,  having faced off previously just twice before in 1981, the Scots and the Israelis come together for the seventh instalment of what has been a particularly tight contest in all previous meetings.

Most recently, the Scots claimed a come-from-behind draw in Tel Aviv, their third draw with Israel in their 4 most recent contests.  Prior to that fixture, the Scots had claimed a nervy penalty-shootout victory to their Euro 2020 play-off victory over Serbia at the end of 2019.

Now, with 2nd place in the group very much up for grabs and a potential play-off route to the WC finals in Qatar, the Scots know a win here would give them a guaranteed 4-point advantage over both Israel and Austria with just 3 fixtures remaining in the group. Conversely, a draw for Israel could leave all 3 nations with genuine hopes of finishing in 2nd behind runaway group leaders Denmark.

Certainly, the Scots come into this fixture in greater spirits though having claimed a vital pair of wins against Moldova and Austria last month and while Israel also picked up 2 wins during the same period, a 5:0 hammering in Denmark in their third fixture of the triple-header may well have damaged Israeli confidence coming into this huge fixture.

Still, it´s hard to back the Scots with too much confidence given their lack of goalscoring prowess and given both sides familiarity with one another, and we expect a really tight and potentially low-scoring contest in what looks like a likely decisive fixture in the battle for 2nd place in the group. Each of the last 4 meetings between these sides has also finished with under 2.5 goals scored.

Ultimately, much will depend on the Scots ability to keep Israeli star striker Eran Zahavi quiet with the PSV man in red-hot form for both club and country, and one suspects that it could just be one goal separates these sides come 8 PM on Saturday.

Still, with plenty of Premier League quality, Scotland really should be looking to take 3 points here, but Israel are not to be under-estimated, and a share of the spoils looks the likeliest outcome.

Scotland Team News

Scotland is boosted by the return to fitness of Scott McTominay however, Ryan Jack remains a long-term absentee while Greg Taylor also misses out. Veteran goalkeepers McLaughlin and Marshall have dropped out of the squad, with Zander Clark and Liam Kelly providing backup to 38-year old Craig Gordon.

Otherwise, the Scots have a strong squad to choose from with precocious talent. Billy Gilmour is expected to start in midfield however the return of McTominay will leave head coach Clarke with questions to ponder regarding his selections in both defence and midfield.

Premier League defenders Tierney and Robertson are certs to start, with fellow PL men McGinn and Adams expected to provide much of the Scots attacking threat.

Israel Team News

Israel is unable to call on the services of Defenders Eitan Tibi and Orel Dgani, sub keeper Ariel Harush and midfielder Omer Atzili all ruled out.

Veteran forward Eran Zahavi, 34, has scored 7 goals in his last 6 appearances for Israel, taking his tally to 31 goals in 67 caps. Remarkably, Zahavi has scored 25 goals in his previous 28 appearances since turning 30. He had scored just 6 in his first 39 caps.
