Portugal are ranked 5th on the FIFA World Ranking List, but their performances at the World Cup haven't been great in recent years. Their best achievement in the past four tournaments was in 2022, when they reached the Quarter Finals. However, they had a good period before this World Cup, as they fairly easily secured the top spot in the Qualifiers. Yet, they were the most impressive before the Qualifiers, winning UEFA Nations League A by beating Spain in the Finals. 

After a 2:1 win over Chile, coach Roberto Martínez spoke to the media. He liked many aspects of their performances despite the unusual circumstances and playing 10 vs 10 after two red cards in the 45th minute. The coach said that South American teams are accustomed to intense matches, adding that this is good preparation for facing Colombia in the group stage. 

Probably one of the more interesting things regarding Portugal is whether Cristiano Ronaldo would be in the starting eleven in the WC. Coach Marinez did not specify that he would, but he gave some indications that the 41-year-old might start.

Nigeria are one of the best African national teams. In the previous AFCON, they finished 3rd, failing to reach the Finals only after Morocco beat them on penalties. However, the popular Super Eagles completely disappointed in the World Cup Qualifiers, winning just 17 points in 10 rounds. They finished 2nd and had another chance to reach the WC in the Playoffs, but lost to DR Congo on penalties once again. So, despite being among the best African NTs, they failed to reach the World Cup for the second time in a row, having previously missed the one in Qatar 2022.
