Already assured of their place in next summer´s European Championship, Portugal will be looking for a ninth successive qualification victory when they take on Liechtenstein at Rheinpark Stadion.

Perhaps the biggest mismatch of the week, at least on paper, it´s hard to see anything other than a convincing Portuguese win on Thursday.

Sitting eight points clear at the top, Portugal have scored a whopping 32 goals in eight successive qualification victories against Slovakia (x2), Luxembourg (x2), Bosnia (x2), Iceland and, of course, Liechtenstein. That´s an average of four goals per game. 

Portugal claimed a comfortable 4:0 win when these nations met in Lisbon last year and since then, Roberto Martinez´s men have rattled nine past Luxembourg and five against Bosnia last time out. 

While the Portuguese have enjoyed serene progress to the finals, Liechtenstein remain the whipping boys in Group J. The home side have picked up no points from eight matches while conceding a total of 25 goals. 

Looking at the H2H record reveals Portugal have won seven but drawn one of eight previous matches against Thursday´s hosts. A 2:2 draw in Liechtenstein in WC qualification in 2004 was one of the most embarrassing results in the country's history and a repeat seems improbable this week. Remarkably, Cristiano Ronaldo started that match 19 years ago, as he will this coming Thursday.

Given the massive gap between these nations, a dominant away win seems a banker on Thursday. I expect Martinez´s men to score at least four goals and potentially more against a beleaguered opponent. Oh, and don´t be surprised to see the legendary Ronaldo add to his international goalscoring record.
