Czechia can secure their place at next summer´s European Championship when they take on Moldova in a huge qualification contest at Andrův stadion on Monday.

While the Czechs have been far from impressive in recent months, the home nation will qualify for Euro 2024 should they avoid defeat on Monday.

Sitting second in the section with 12 points, Czechia secured a vital point on Poland on Friday and now faces a winner-takes-all contest against unlikely qualification rivals Moldova. Despite winning just two of seven qualification matches, the visitors collected vital draws against Albania and Poland to keep themselves in the hunt for a first-ever major tournament appearance.

Indeed, few would have given the Moldovans much chance to qualify from this section, however, they now arrive in Olumuc knowing a win would secure a runners-up spot and, with it, a stunning first appearance in Germany next summer.

While that outcome still seems unlikely, Czechia have struggled in 2023 and will be taking nothing for granted against a nation that has lost only one of its last six matches. The Czechs have only managed to win one of their last five fixtures, a nervy 1:0 victory against the Faroe Islands. They were also held to a 0:0 draw when these nations met earlier in this qualifying campaign. 

Still, Moldova have next to no winning experience in away qualifiers. The Balkan nation have only managed to win one away qualifier in the European Championship over the past decade - a 1:0 win in the Faroe Islands this year. Before that win, Moldova had lost 12 of their previous 14 away European Championship qualifiers since 2010.

Given what´s at stake, this is sure to prove a nervy occasion in Olumuc. The hosts look far too short to back and while Moldova must win, the away side are unlikely to be gung-ho in their approach to this fixture. 

As such, I´m taking Moldova in the handicap market. Sergiu Cleşcenco´s side have lost by more than one goal in just two of their last seven away qualifiers over the past two years. With the Czechs potentially nervy, and needing only a draw, I expect a more cagey occasion than the oddsmakers odds might suggest.
