Houston Rockets

After suffering a disappointing comeback defeat against the Miami Heat before losing in overtime to Trae Young's Atlanta Hawks, Dwane Casey's Detroit Pistons (3-11) need a response.

They host another unknown quantity in the Houston Rockets following franchise guard James Harden's trade last week. Bam Adebayo had 28 points, and 11 rebounds as Miami clawed their way back from 19 down to earn an ugly 113-107 victory, but one they're nonetheless proud of.

Meanwhile, Young had a new season-high 38 points to sting them in overtime overnight, as the Hawks recovered from a 17-point deficit in the fourth quarter - inflicting more damage on them.

Things look bleak in Detroit, with news confirming their draft pick Killian Hayes (hip) is sidelined for at least two months. Can they defend better here, during another cross-conference clash? Read my basketball preview, for the best betting odds ahead of this compelling H2H matchup.

Detroit Pistons vs Houston Rockets Preview

Jerami Grant has led the Pistons in scoring for all but one of their 14 games to date and had a career-high 32 points - including all nine in overtime but it wasn't enough to stop Atlanta's rousing comeback.

This result means they've overtaken the Minnesota Timberwolves as the NBA's worst record-holder right now, after big performances from the Hawks - not just Young.

He started slowly - recording just six first-half points - while their big men proved pivotal.

John Collins had 31 points on 13-of-24 shooting, and Clint Capela scored 27 alongside a career-high 26 rebounds and season-high five blocks during a clash they were short-handed for.

De'Andre Hunter and Cam Reddish (both knee) were ruled out of contention during the pregame warm-ups, and Young was happy with their effort considering the situation.

"I'm just happy we never gave up.

From beginning to end, no matter who was out there - we knew we were down a couple of guys. If we continue to get that same type of effort, scoring and rebounding from those guys, the sky is the limit for this team."

Although they let a promising lead slip from their grasp, Detroit had efficient production from Derrick Rose's likes (14 pts) and a sharp-shooting Wayne Ellington (16 pts, three assists).

He had a game-high four threes, accounting for 40% of their buckets from deep (10-of-31, 32.3%) and that's a percentage that needs to improve here against the Rockets drastically.

Blake Griffin had 17 pts, seven rebounds and four assists, while offseason acquisition Mason Plumlee was one rebound shy of a double-double before getting fouled out in 26 minutes.

During their defeat by Chicago, Houston shot 17-of-40 (42.5%) from three-point range.

In a game often decided by such fine margins, they have multiple players who can hit threes even in John Wall's absence - the All-Star guard is a below-average deep-range shooter.

First-year head coach Stephen Silas revealed Wall (knee) is expected to return next week, a welcome boost for a side who need all the scoring help they can afford in Harden's absence.

Victor Oladipo is averaging 27.5 points, five rebounds and 7.5 assists through two games with his new teammates and playing an unfamiliar role with added responsibilities at point guard.

It'll be interesting to see how big men DeMarcus Cousins and Christian Wood fare in this clash, and such has been the latter's immediate impact since joining Detroit in the offseason.

Detroit Pistons vs Houston Rockets Betting Tips

Unsurprisingly, ESPN's Basketball Power Index has given Houston the edge in this encounter (66.5%), largely because Detroit doesn't have enough consistent weapons besides Grant.

He's extended his 20-point streak to 13 consecutive games and will be a player Houston focus on trying to limit in terms of overall influence, but that's not where this game will be won or lost.

Instead, I think it's important their bench - besides Derrick Rose - produces efficient minutes and they're able to score without much trouble when Grant/Rose are not on the court at any one time.

Even without Wall, who has begun the season encouragingly after his well-documented injury struggles in recent seasons, I think the Rockets will have enough scoring firepower to prevail.
