Both Teams to Score (BTTS) bets (sometimes referred to as Goals Galore) have become increasingly popular over the last few years. Some bookies offer special coupons in these market and many offer incentives and bonuses attached to this market.
These bets can be made on a single game or combined to make doubles, trebles, or larger accumulators. These bets are popular because the outcome can be concluded right up until the final whistle. So, even if one team is winning 4-0, the other team only needs to score once for the bet to be successful.
Casual punters often do little to no research into these bets but it is always worth looking for trends in a market before placing any wager.
Using the current 2017/18 Bundesliga as an example, we can see how trends can be spotted early on that might increase our overall chances of finding a winner in this market.
With seven games played, Leverkusen who were topping the BTTS charts with an overall strike rate of 71%. However, this figure was distorted by a 100% record away from home.
On home soil, RB Leipzig had scored and conceded in all their games giving them a 100% hit rate while Hertha and Wolfsburg both came in at 75%.
Away from home, Hoffenheim joined the aforementioned Leverkusen with a BTTS payout in every game.
So what does this all tell us?
Well, first it tells us which teams to consider backing in this market but it does not always reveal the whole picture. For example, if a team with a 75% strike rate at home is hosting a team with a 25% score on the road, the probability is reduced drastically. Therefore, we have to look at the percentages of both teams involved.
If the strike rate for both teams is 75%, then we should consider adding this game to our Both Teams to Score betting slip. As a general rule, if the combined percentages of both teams equals 130 or more then we are in the right territory. If it is 150 or more, then the bet is almost a no-brainer.
If we look at the top-ranked teams in the German top flight from the 16/17 season, we can get an idea of which teams to look at in bet365's Bundesliga betting columns for this market:
• Dortmund (away) 82.4%
• FC Koln (away) 70.6%
• Freiburg (away) 70.6%
• Hoffenheim (away) 82.4%
• Ingolstadt (home) 64.7%
• Leverkusen (home) 64.7%
• Mainz (home) 64.7%
• Werder Bremen (home) 70.6% (away) 82.4%
If we apply our criteria (combined total of 130 or more) to those teams, we can analyse the outcomes:
1. Ingolstadt 3-3 Dortmund
2. Ingolstadt 2-2 Koln
3. Ingolstadt 1-2 Freiburg
4. Ingolstadt 1-2 Hoffenheim
5. Ingolstadt 2-4 Werder Bremen
6. Leverkusen 2-0 Dortmund
7. Leverkusen 2-2 Koln
8. Leverkusen 4-0 Freiburg
9. Leverkusen 2-2 Hoffenheim
10. Leverkusen 1-1 Werder Bremen
11. Mainz 1-1 Dortmund
12. Mainz 0-0 Koln
13. Mainz 4-2 Freiburg
14. Mainz 4-4 Hoffenheim
15. Mainz 0-2 Werder Bremen
16. Werder Bremen 1-2 Dortmund
17. Werder Bremen 1-1 Koln
18. Werder Bremen 1-2 Freiburg
19. Werder Bremen 3-5 Hoffenheim
As you can see, 15 out of the 19 matches involving those teams paid out in this market. Obviously, you do not have the final percentages until after the season. But, after 10 games or so, you have a good sample size to work with.
And teams that follow this trend and retain the same Coach often produce similar results from one season to the next, Hoffenheim (away) being a prime example in this case. Thomas Tuchel’s men may be putting pressure on their rivals at the top of the table but they rarely fail to score or keep a clean sheet on the road.
